The crew visits a holographic Irish village.

Tom Paris creates Fair Haven, a holodeck re-creation of a nineteenth-century Irish village, and it quickly becomes a crew favourite. When a neutronic wavefront forces Voyager to stop and wait for days, Janeway agrees to keep the program running for morale, and crew members take on roles, with the Doctor becoming the village priest.
Janeway is drawn to the barkeeper Michael Sullivan, and when he turns out to have a wife, she rewrites him to suit her, making him more educated and removing the wife. She discusses with Chakotay whether a relationship with a hologram can be real, and the Doctor encourages her to continue. When the storm hits hard and damages the program, Janeway saves Sullivan but then tells the computer to stop her changing him further, unsure of what she wants. The sixth-season episode is a gentle romance about loneliness in command, and the village returns in the follow-up Spirit Folk.
