Paris is on trial for a murder he does not remember.
Tom Paris is put on trial for the murder of an alien scientist on a planet whose people punish him by forcing him to relive the crime again and again through an implanted memory. Tuvok begins investigating on his behalf to find out what really happened.
The episode is built like a noir mystery, and it gives Tuvok his first extended role as a detective. It continues to develop Paris, whose reputation for recklessness and past troubles make it easy for others to believe he could be guilty. Its structure makes use of flashbacks to build tension.
