Ferengi

Profit-driven traders

A species obsessed with profit, governed by the Rules of Acquisition.

The Ferengi are a species from the planet Ferenginar, easily recognised by their large ears, which are highly sensitive, and by their sharp teeth. Their society is built around commerce, and its guiding creed is a set of principles known as the Rules of Acquisition that treat profit as the highest good.
Ferengi culture is male dominated by tradition, with women barred from wearing clothes in public and from earning profit, though this changes over time. Business dealings and contracts matter more than almost anything else, and success in trade confers status. Their government is run by a Grand Nagus, who holds great power over the economy.
The Ferengi first appeared in the Next Generation as would-be rivals to the Federation. They became far more rounded in Deep Space Nine, where Quark runs a bar on the station, his brother Rom becomes an engineer, and his nephew Nog is the first Ferengi to join Starfleet. Grand Nagus Zek and later Rom guide the Ferengi toward reform and a broader view of the world.
