Quark is named successor to the Grand Nagus and faces a power struggle.

Grand Nagus Zek arrives on the station, holds a Ferengi business conference in Quark's bar and stuns everyone by naming Quark his successor before apparently dying. Quark enjoys his new standing and wins favor by handing out lucrative opportunities, but Zek's son Krax and Quark's brother Rom conspire to have him killed. Zek reappears alive to stop them, revealing that he faked his death to see whether Krax was ready to lead, and Krax failed.
In the second plot, Sisko worries about Jake's friendship with Nog, particularly after Rom pulls Nog out of Keiko's school. The boys keep disappearing together, and Sisko finally discovers that Jake has been quietly teaching Nog to read. This first-season episode introduces Zek and gives Rom and Nog their first real stories, setting up Ferengi politics and the Jake and Nog friendship that the series returns to many times.
