The 2355 battle in which Captain Picard's Stargazer defeated an unknown attacker using the Picard Maneuver, before the crew abandoned the damaged ship.
In 2355 the USS Stargazer, under Captain Jean-Luc Picard, was attacked without warning by an unidentified ship near the Maxia Zeta star system. Picard used a tactic that became known as the Picard Maneuver, making a very short jump at warp speed so that, to the enemy's sensors, the Stargazer appeared to be in two places at once. The attacker fired at the wrong image and was destroyed.
The Stargazer was so badly damaged that its crew abandoned it in shuttles and left the wreck drifting. The attacking ship was later revealed to be Ferengi.
In the Next Generation episode The Battle, set in 2364, DaiMon Bok, whose son had commanded the Ferengi ship, returns the drifting Stargazer to Picard. He uses a mind-control device to make Picard relive the battle and attack the Enterprise-D. Riker and Data discover the plot, and Picard recognises his own manoeuvre and stops it.
