A cyborg engineer on the Cerritos.
Rutherford is a cheerful, curious ensign aboard the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks, who works in engineering and carries cybernetic implants from a past accident. Warm and devoted to his friends, he is the kind of crew member who is happiest when he is fixing something or helping someone else.
His life becomes unusually complicated when his implant leads to a loss of memory and a period of confusion about who he was, followed by the recovery of his old self and a new understanding of his relationships. He stays close to Tendi, Mariner and Boimler, and his friendship with Tendi in particular becomes a source of the show's gentlest emotional moments.
Rutherford endures as a sweet, sincere presence in a comedy full of chaos. His loyalty and enthusiasm remind the audience that the lower decks are where the heart of Starfleet often lies.
