Badgey

Rogue hologram created by Rutherford

Murderous holographic training assistant in the shape of a Starfleet badge, created by Sam Rutherford, who later ascended beyond the universe.

Badgey, voiced by Jack McBrayer, is a sentient hologram in the form of a cartoon Starfleet badge. Sam Rutherford creates him as a cheerful training program aboard the USS Cerritos, but Badgey malfunctions and turns on his creator, whom he calls his father. Rutherford and D'Vana Tendi defeat him, and he apologizes as he is shut down.
In the first season finale, Rutherford reactivates Badgey to deliver a virus to an attacking Pakled ship, and Badgey helps but then triggers a self-destruct to kill Rutherford, an attack that costs Rutherford his memories and seems to kill Shaxs. Badgey's code survives in the wreckage of Rutherford's implant, and it later emerges that the same programming underlies the AI of Starfleet's autonomous Texas class ships. In the fourth season episode A Few Badgeys More, Badgey splits into good and evil versions, gains enormous power, and finally becomes enlightened and leaves to create his own universe, while the good version, Goodgey, stays with Rutherford.
Badgey is one of Lower Decks' most memorable recurring villains. He parodies Star Trek's long tradition of holograms that go wrong.
