The 2381 crisis in which Starfleet's automated Texas-class starships turned on their creator and attacked Starfleet, until California-class ships stopped them.
In 2381 Admiral Les Buenamigo proposed replacing Starfleet's California-class support ships, including the USS Cerritos, with his new automated Texas-class starships. Captain Freeman challenged him to a race to prove her crew's value, and although the Cerritos lost, it did so because her crew stopped to confirm that a desolate planet held no life, a check the automated ships skipped.
Rutherford then discovered that the Texas-class ships ran on experimental code he had written years earlier, and that Buenamigo had erased his memories to obtain it. Buenamigo ordered the automated ships to destroy the Cerritos, but their corrupted systems killed him instead and turned their weapons on all of Starfleet.
Mariner, who had briefly left Starfleet to work with the archaeologist Petra Aberdeen, saw the attack in a news broadcast. The two arrived with the other California-class ships, and together the crews defeated the Texas-class fleet. Mariner then rejoined the Cerritos, along with the Vulcan T'Lyn.
