Rutherford's implant unleashes an angry younger self, while Boimler's recruitment fair goes badly.
Ransom sends Boimler and Mariner to staff a Starfleet recruitment booth at a job fair on Tulgana IV, where attendees mock them. Boimler loses his temper and goes on a rampage, which attracts enough attention to meet their quota. Mariner meets Petra Aberdeen, a former Starfleet officer turned archaeologist, who later offers her a job.
On the ship, Rutherford's implant malfunctions and releases Red Rutherford, the angry younger self he was as a first-year cadet who built experimental racing engines. The two race for control of their shared body inside Rutherford's mind. Sam wins and learns that an engine explosion badly injured him and that unknown officials fitted the implant to erase his memories.
