The Bynars are a humanoid species from the planet Bynaus who are so closely linked with computers that they think and communicate in binary. They usually work in pairs and speak to each other in rapid bursts of sound, and each Bynar carries a small device on the belt that connects to computer systems.
In the Next Generation episode 11001001, the Enterprise-D docks at Starbase 74 for maintenance, and a team of Bynars is hired to upgrade its computers. A stellar explosion has damaged the master computer that runs their planet, and they need a computer large enough to store its data. They arrange a false emergency so that the crew evacuates, then take the empty ship to Bynaus.
Riker and Picard, who were still aboard on the holodeck with the remarkably lifelike character Minuet, discover what has happened and retake the ship. Rather than punishing the Bynars, they help them complete the transfer and restore their world.
