Warp field

Subspace distortion that carries a ship faster than light

A warp field is the bubble of subspace distortion generated by a starship's warp coils, allowing it to travel faster than light without violating local physics.

Warp coils in the nacelles create overlapping layers of field energy that warp space around the vessel. Engineers can adjust the field's geometry for efficiency or for unusual tasks, such as extending it around another ship, using it as a shield against hazards, or modifying it to escape a trap.
Warp fields interact with subspace itself, and Federation scientists eventually confirmed that heavy traffic could weaken subspace in fragile regions. The finding, first raised by Hekaran researchers, led to restricted travel and new speed limits until improved engine designs were introduced.
