A Kelpien who rose through the ranks of Discovery to become its captain.
Saru is a Kelpien officer who rises from science specialist to first officer, and later captain, of the USS Discovery. Played by Doug Jones, he comes from a prey species on the planet Kaminar and carries a deep wariness and heightened sense of danger that he learns to turn into wisdom.
His early years are marked by tension with Michael Burnham, whom he distrusts, but the two grow into trusted friends. Saru also forms a close bond with Tilly, supports the crew through moments of crisis and slowly discovers that the fear that once defined him can be overcome. His home world and its true history become central to his own story, forcing him to question what his people were told about their place in the galaxy.
Saru endures as one of the franchise's gentlest and most thoughtful leaders, a captain whose compassion and humility make him unforgettable.
