Doug Jones is an American actor celebrated for physical, prosthetic-heavy performances, many of them for director Guillermo del Toro, including Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth and the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water.
In Star Trek: Discovery he played Saru, the first Kelpien to join Starfleet. Introduced as Michael Burnham's fellow officer aboard the USS Shenzhou, Saru serves as Discovery's first officer, takes command of the ship after its arrival in the 32nd century and later turns to diplomacy as a Federation ambassador. Jones remained with the series for all five seasons.
His movement-driven acting conveyed Saru's instinctive fear response and his growing confidence beneath extensive makeup, and the character became one of the emotional anchors of the show from its first episode to its last.
