Helm officer of the USS Discovery, a veteran of the Shenzhou with cybernetic implants from the Battle of the Binary Stars.
Keyla Detmer, played by Emily Coutts, is a Starfleet officer who flies the USS Discovery. She first served aboard the USS Shenzhou under Captain Philippa Georgiou and was badly hurt at the Battle of the Binary Stars, leaving her with cybernetic implants on the left side of her face, including her left eye.
Six months after the loss of the Shenzhou, Detmer is promoted to full lieutenant and posted to Discovery as helm officer under Gabriel Lorca. She steers the ship through the Klingon War, the mirror universe and the fight against Control. After Discovery jumps into the 32nd century, Detmer pilots the ship through a crash landing and afterwards struggles with trauma, a strain her crewmates gradually help her through.
Detmer is one of Discovery's longest-serving bridge officers, and her skill at the helm is relied on in nearly every major battle. Her recovery in the third season is one of the series' clearest looks at the psychological cost of Starfleet service.
