On Kaminar, a young Saru longs to escape a village culled by the Ba'ul and sends a signal answered by Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou.
On the planet Kaminar, the young Saru lives in a pre-warp farming village whose people, the Kelpiens, are hunted as food by the predatory Ba'ul and expected to accept their fate. Saru is curious about the world beyond, and he longs to know what lies past the sky.
Defying his village's ways, he manages to send a signal out into space. It is answered by Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou, who arrives and offers him a chance to leave and join Starfleet, beginning his path to the Discovery. The short, released in December 2018, was directed by Douglas Aarniokoski and written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt.
