A miner in the 32nd century who helped Discovery's stranded crew and was killed by the courier Zareh.
Kal appears in Far From Home, the first episode in which the USS Discovery reaches the 32nd century. After the ship crash-lands on an icy world, Saru and Sylvia Tilly visit a nearby settlement in search of repair materials and meet a group of impoverished miners living under the thumb of the courier Zareh. Kal, a Coridan miner who still believes in the Federation, helps them.
The miners agree to supply programmable matter for Discovery's repairs in return for some of the ship's dilithium, which would let them escape Zareh. When Zareh arrives and attacks the group, Kal is killed.
