The Akira-class was a Starfleet starship design of the late 24th century, with a broad flattened saucer joined to a twin-hulled rear section and a pair of warp nacelles slung beneath. It was well suited to combat duty.
Akira-class ships first appeared in 2373 in the fleet that confronted a Borg cube at the Battle of Sector 001, among them the USS Thunderchild. The class became a fixture of Starfleet task forces in the Dominion War, joining the fleets that fought to retake Deep Space Nine.
