The Gorn attack the USS Cayuga at the colony Parnassus Beta, and Pike defies orders to rescue Batel and the survivors in the second-season cliffhanger.
The USS Cayuga, under Captain Batel, is destroyed by the Gorn while delivering supplies to the colony Parnassus Beta. Chapel, aboard for her fellowship, survives. A Gorn jamming device blocks communications and transporters, and Pike, ignoring orders not to enter Gorn-claimed space, takes a team to the surface.
There they find Batel and other survivors, along with engineer Montgomery Scott, who has built a device that mimics Gorn signals. Batel has been implanted with Gorn eggs. Spock crashes the Cayuga's wreck into the jammer, and Pike, Scott and Batel are beamed up, but the Gorn capture the rest of the away team, leaving the season on a cliffhanger.
