La'An solves a murder mystery inside a holodeck simulation.
La'an tests the Enterprise's experimental holodeck by asking for a murder mystery set on a 1960s television series, The Last Frontier, populated by likenesses of the crew. While she plays, Scotty struggles to keep the holodeck powered as the ship works to escape a collapsing neutron star. When the safety protocols fail, La'an is trapped and must solve the case to end the simulation, and she finally realizes that the Spock beside her is a hologram and the killer.
Afterward she recommends against general use of the holodeck until the technology improves, and later, during another dance lesson, she and the real Spock kiss. The episode is a playful homage to the era in which the original series was made, and it offers an in-universe reason holodecks are absent from the Enterprise until The Next Generation.
