B'Elanna takes dangerous risks after a loss.
When a Malon ship tries to seize a Voyager probe, Janeway sends it into the atmosphere of a gas giant, and the crew races to build a new shuttle, the Delta Flyer, to recover it before the Malon do. Torres, however, seems detached from everyone, and an injury during a holodeck test reveals that she has been running dangerous programs with the safety protocols disabled.
Chakotay learns that Torres has been numbing herself since receiving news that most of their Maquis comrades had been killed by the Cardassians and their Dominion allies. He helps her face her grief, and she joins the mission, saving the Delta Flyer when its hull is breached. The episode marked the debut of the Delta Flyer.
