Nyota Uhura is the communications officer of the Enterprise in the original series, a position that makes her the voice of the ship and a key member of the bridge crew. Poised, intelligent and quick-witted, she handles translation, signal analysis and sometimes security matters with confidence.
She has a friendship with Spock, who accompanies her singing, and she is the center of a famous moment in which a kiss between her and Kirk is shown. She also appears in the original films, taking on greater responsibility, and a version of her is a major character in the rebooted film timeline. A younger version appears as a cadet in Strange New Worlds.
Uhura was an important figure in television history as a Black woman in a position of respect and authority, and she remains a symbol of competence and inclusion.
