Pike wakes with apparent amnesia in a melodramatic soap-opera version of his crew, all under Trelane's mind control.
Pike wakes in sickbay missing about two weeks of memory after a shuttle accident in an asteroid belt that has left Spock in a coma. Everything around him plays like a daytime soap opera: La'an tries to free Sybok from prison so he can donate his heart to Spock, M'Benga hides worsening tremors, Uhura announces she is Pike's daughter, and a counselor, Dr. Chivers, played by Deidre Hall, presses him about repressed feelings.
The melodrama is staged by Trelane, the entity from the original series episode The Squire of Gothos, played by Rhys Darby, under the eye of a Q proctor judging whether humanity passes his experiment. Pike resists the false reality until his recipe diary reveals Juliet's birthday dinner, prompting a reunion with the future daughter he glimpsed the previous season before her image fades. Trelane and humanity receive a passing grade, and Pike finally has the therapy session he had avoided.
