Umberto Ortegas, known as Beto, is a documentarian and the younger brother of Erica Ortegas. He was played by Mynor Luken. He joined an archaeological expedition with Christine Chapel and Roger Korby that went wrong when an extradimensional Vezda possessed Dana Gamble.
Beto later filmed a documentary aboard the Enterprise during a mission to transport a weaponized creature, questioning the crew aggressively in hopes of painting Starfleet in a bad light. After Uhura suggested he blamed Starfleet for his strained relationship with his sister and her injuries in the Gorn war, his finished documentary praised the crew instead.
