A documentary follows a mission to deliver a weaponized creature to a war zone, and Uhura helps the filmmaker see Starfleet differently.
Beto Ortegas is filming a documentary about Starfleet while the Enterprise helps Lutani VII in its fight against the Kasar. The crew must transport a Jikaru, a creature the Lutani have altered into a weapon, and Beto questions the crew aggressively about the mission. Lutani scientists who regret the alterations attack the ship and free the creature, and Spock falls into a coma after trying to communicate with it telepathically.
Uhura learns the Jikaru is suffering and wants to die, so the Enterprise guides it into a star, and the Federation agrees to protect its homeworld. Uhura helps Beto see that he has blamed Starfleet for his strained relationship with his sister Erica, and his finished documentary ends by praising Starfleet. Framed through Beto's camera, the episode asks whether Starfleet is an organization of explorers or a military. Sharon Lewis directed.
