The Cage

Original pilot

The unaired pilot: Captain Pike and his crew are lured to Talos IV by illusion-casting aliens who want a human captive.

Filmed in late 1964 as the first Star Trek pilot, The Cage was turned down by NBC, though most of its footage was later reused in the two-part The Menagerie. Captain Christopher Pike takes the Enterprise to Talos IV after a distress signal, and the Talosians, big-brained beings who project powerful illusions, capture him.
The Talosians want Pike to mate with Vina, a human survivor of an earlier crash, and found a captive human population. Pike resists the fantasies they build around him, and the aliens let him go once they conclude that humans will not live in captivity. The pilot features Majel Barrett as the first officer, Number One, and a more expressive Spock. It came out on home video in 1986 and was first broadcast in full colour in 1988.
