The Enterprise's chief medical officer and Christopher Pike's confidant in The Cage, a doctor who counsels his weary captain over a quiet drink.
Dr. Phil Boyce is the ship's doctor of Christopher Pike's Enterprise and the closest thing the reserved captain has to a friend aboard. Early in The Cage, Pike, shaken by the loss of crew members on Rigel VII, confides in Boyce that he is thinking of resigning, and Boyce responds with gentle humor and a mixed drink, urging him not to give up command.
Boyce later joins the landing party on Talos IV and helps the crew make sense of the illusions the Talosians are able to create. He was played by John Hoyt, and his scenes were reused in The Menagerie. The character is regarded as a forerunner of Leonard McCoy.
