Rigel VII is the world where Christopher Pike's landing party fought hostile natives at an ancient fortress just before the events of The Cage. Several crew members were killed or injured, and the loss weighs heavily on Pike as he confides his doubts about command to Dr. Boyce.
On Talos IV the Talosians use this memory against him, placing Pike inside an illusion of the Rigel VII fortress where he must defend Vina from a towering Kaylar warrior. The scene shows how the Talosians probe their captives' minds for experiences to exploit. The fortress footage was later reused in The Menagerie.
