In 2254 Captain Christopher Pike's Enterprise answered a distress call from Talos IV, where the telepathic Talosians captured Pike and tried to make him the founder of a human colony.
The signal appeared to come from survivors of the SS Columbia, missing for eighteen years, but most of what the landing party saw was an illusion. The only real survivor was a young woman named Vina, and the Talosians, who could create convincing illusions, took Pike prisoner and placed him in a series of fantasies with her.
The Talosians hoped Pike would accept captivity and father a race of servants to rebuild their dying world. Instead he resisted, and when Number One and Yeoman Colt were also brought down, the Talosians concluded that humans were too violent and too strong-willed to be held.
They released the Enterprise crew, and Vina, whose body had been badly injured in the crash, chose to stay behind with her illusions. Starfleet afterward forbade all contact with Talos IV, and years later Spock brought the crippled Pike back to the planet to live among the Talosians.
