An older Admiral Janeway travels back in time to bring Voyager home earlier.
In 2404, ten years after Voyager's return, Admiral Kathryn Janeway regrets what the long trip home cost, from crew members who died to Tuvok's mental decline and the death of Seven of Nine. With help from Captain Harry Kim, she steals a time-travel device and travels back to 2378, where Voyager is still deep in the Delta Quadrant.
The admiral uses her rank and her future technology to send the ship into a nebula guarded by the Borg, where it finds a transwarp hub that could take the crew home at once. Captain Janeway would rather destroy the hub to protect the Alpha Quadrant, and after the admiral explains what lies ahead, the crew agree with her. The two Janeways then work out a plan to do both, and the admiral flies her shuttle into the hub to face the Borg Queen. The episode opens the two-part series finale with a story built on time travel and second chances.
