Kate Mulgrew is an American actress and author, born in 1955, who first came to attention as Mary Ryan on the soap opera Ryan's Hope. She was cast as Captain Kathryn Janeway shortly after production began on Star Trek: Voyager's pilot, Caretaker, and led the series from 1995 to 2001.
As Janeway, Mulgrew played a scientist-captain stranded with her crew in the Delta Quadrant, forced to merge Starfleet officers with Maquis rebels and to make hard choices far from home. Her seven-year arc ended with Endgame, in which an older Admiral Janeway alters history to bring Voyager back. She briefly reprised the role in Star Trek: Nemesis and later returned to voice Janeway in the animated series Prodigy.
Outside Star Trek, Mulgrew earned acclaim and an Emmy nomination as Red on Orange Is the New Black. She has also written memoirs about her life and career.
