Paul Stamets is an astromycologist and the engineer behind Discovery's spore drive, a technology that allows the ship to travel instantly through a vast network of mycelium. Sharp, prickly and passionate about his work, he begins as a reluctant colleague of the Starfleet crew and grows into one of its most beloved members.
His life changes after an accident ties him to the drive, and he learns more about the mycelial network and its inhabitants. He is partnered with Hugh Culber, a medical officer, and their relationship becomes a central emotional thread, including Culber's death and return. He is also a mentor to Tilly and a friend to Burnham, and he helps in the mission to the future.
Stamets blends science and heart, and his devotion to his work and loved ones makes him a memorable character.
