Adira is a young human who arrives in the story of Star Trek: Discovery as a brilliant but guarded newcomer, joined to the Tal symbiont, a Trill who carries the memories of earlier hosts. Adira uses they and them pronouns and becomes one of the most distinctive young officers of the thirty-second century.
The character first appears in the third season, when Discovery reaches a future shattered by the Burn. Adira forms a close bond with Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, who become something like a family, and their grief over Gray, a former Trill host who loved them, drives a moving arc. Gray is eventually given a new body through the efforts of Culber and the crew, and the pair remain central to Adira's growth as an engineer and as a Starfleet officer.
