Sardonic Starfleet engineer rescued from the wreck of the USS Hiawatha, who later served aboard Discovery and taught at Starfleet Academy.
Jett Reno, played by Tig Notaro, is the chief engineer of the medical frigate USS Hiawatha, which crashes during the Klingon War. Reno keeps the injured survivors alive for months in the wreck until the USS Discovery finds them, and she then joins Discovery's engineering staff.
Reno is known for her deadpan humor, her fondness for old fashioned fixes such as duct tape and power drills, and her running clashes with Paul Stamets. She is a widow whose wife was killed by Klingons during the war. She goes with Discovery into the 32nd century, and in the fifth season it is revealed that before Starfleet she worked as a smuggler and at various odd jobs. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy she moves to the USS Athena, becomes an instructor at the academy, and pursues a romance with the cadet master Lura Thok.
Reno brings a dry, irreverent voice to Discovery's engineering crew. She also became one of the links between Discovery and Starfleet Academy.
