Burnham and Tilly go undercover among a pre-warp people to repair a weather tower, bending the Prime Directive to survive.
The next clue lies in a Denobulan weather tower on Halem'no, disguised as a mountain, which protects a pre-warp people from deadly storms and brings rain. Bound by the Prime Directive, Burnham and Tilly go undercover among the Halem'nites while Adira helps Burnham fix the tower's broken controls.
Tilly and a local, Ravah, win a race to the tower but are then locked in as sacrifices to the Halem'nite gods. Burnham breaks the Prime Directive to free them and shows that the tower is technology needing no sacrifice. With the fragment in hand, the crew learns that Moll and L'ak have been found. Meanwhile Stamets and Book help Culber with the spiritual impact of sharing his body with Jinaal. Chris Byrne directed.
