An experimental Starfleet ship with a protostar-powered drive, found and flown by a young crew of former prisoners in Prodigy.
The USS Protostar was an experimental Starfleet vessel of the 2380s, designed with an advanced propulsion system known as the protostar drive. It was a sleek prototype starship, built with the latest technology for speed and flexibility, and was intended to be a symbol of the Federation's future.
The ship was found by a group of young aliens who had been prisoners on a mining colony and who used the ship to escape. Led by the unlikely commander Dal R'El and joined by Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Zero and the pet Murf, the group had no experience with Starfleet but began to learn its ideals. A hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway served as their guide and mentor, teaching them how to use the ship and what the Federation was meant to be.
The crew had to avoid the Diviner, their enemy, who wanted the ship for his own purposes, while also making their way toward the Federation. Along the way they were joined by other Starfleet figures who helped them to become real officers. The ship became a symbol of a new generation and was the centre of a story about courage, growth and hope.
