The 2384 crisis in which a weapon hidden aboard the USS Protostar turned a Starfleet armada against itself until the young crew destroyed their own ship.
The Diviner had planted a weapon called the Living Construct aboard the USS Protostar, intending to use it to destroy Starfleet. The young crew who had stolen the ship from Tars Lamora learned of the danger and tried to warn Starfleet, while Admiral Kathryn Janeway and the USS Dauntless pursued them.
In 2384 the Protostar met a large Federation armada. The Diviner, Drednok and an ally called the Vindicator beamed aboard, and the Vindicator set off the weapon. The ships of the fleet began destroying each other and their translators failed. The Diviner was mortally wounded saving his daughter Gwyn, and Gwyn used her talent for languages to call for help from Federation allies.
The crew realized they could stop the destruction by sending the Protostar to proto-warp while destroying it at the same moment. Hologram Janeway stayed behind as the others escaped in a hastily built shuttle. At their trial on Earth, Admiral Janeway spoke for them, and the young crew were allowed to join her as warrant officers.
