The USS Hiawatha was a Starfleet medical frigate that went missing during the Klingon War. It crashed on an asteroid, and for months its surviving crew and patients were kept alive by a single engineer, Commander Jett Reno, who improvised medical care for the wounded.
In 2257, while investigating a series of mysterious red signals, Christopher Pike and the Discovery found the wreck. The Discovery's team rescued Reno and the survivors before the asteroid was destroyed, and Reno joined the Discovery as an engineer.
