Hoshi Sato is the communications officer of the Enterprise NX-01 in Star Trek: Enterprise. She is a gifted linguist who joins the crew despite her fear of space travel, and her skill at translating unfamiliar languages makes her essential to the ship's first contacts with other species.
She begins the series as nervous and unsure, but her confidence grows steadily as she faces new challenges. She forms friendships with her fellow crew members, especially Captain Archer and Trip Tucker, and her abilities are tested in a number of dangerous encounters. She also shows a talent for learning cultures as well as languages, which helps her to build bridges between peoples. In a mirror-universe story, she appears as a very different and more ambitious figure.
