Mars

Red planet

Mars is the fourth planet of the Sol system, a red, dusty world that humanity has settled in the Star Trek era. Its surface is dominated by large colonies and industrial areas, and it is an important centre of Federation technology. It lies close to Earth, which has made it a natural place to build.
The planet is home to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, one of the great shipbuilding facilities of Starfleet, which has produced many of the Federation's ships. Mars has been settled for centuries, and its cities and shipyards are a major feature of the human presence in space.
Mars plays an important part in Star Trek: Picard, in which a synthetic attack on the Mars shipyards leads to a ban on synthetic life. Captain Picard resigns from Starfleet in protest after the Federation abandons the rescue of the Romulans. The attack on Mars, and its consequences, form a crucial part of Picard's backstory, and the planet is a place of both achievement and tragedy.
