In 2032, during the Ares IV mission to Mars, command module pilot John Kelly was swallowed by a graviton ellipse, stranding his crewmates on the surface.
Ares IV was part of humanity's early crewed exploration of Mars. While his two crewmates worked on the surface, Lieutenant John Kelly remained in orbit aboard the command module, which was drawn into a graviton ellipse, a subspace phenomenon that moves through space. Kelly was lost, and the others were stranded on Mars for weeks before rescue.
In 2376 Voyager encountered the same ellipse in the Delta Quadrant. Chakotay, Paris and Seven of Nine recovered the module, Kelly's remains and his final logs, and Voyager honoured him with a funeral in space.
