Worf and Dax prepare for their long-awaited wedding, but because Dax will join the House of Martok she must win the approval of Martok's wife Sirella, who disdains her. Worf takes Sisko, O'Brien, Bashir and his son Alexander through the Kal'Hyah, which turns out to be not a party but days of fasting, ordeals and bloodletting. Dax antagonizes Sirella by mentioning that her line descends from a concubine, and the two come to blows when Sirella interrupts Dax's party.
Sirella forbids the union and the wedding is called off. Sisko reminds Dax that she is a new person, not Curzon the ambassador, and that marrying Worf means honoring his traditions. Dax makes peace with Sirella and the couple marries, after which O'Brien and Bashir gleefully join in the customary beating of the bride and groom. This sixth-season episode, set after the station is retaken, marks a rare joyful moment in the war.
