Voyager meets an Ocampa colony cared for by Suspiria, the Caretaker's mate, and Kes is tempted by her growing mental powers.
The Caretaker's remains begin reacting to a distant energy source, and Janeway hopes it may lead to the Caretaker's female counterpart, Suspiria, who might help send Voyager home. The trail ends at a station of Ocampa led by Tanis, whose people Suspiria has looked after for centuries and who have developed powerful mental abilities.
Tanis begins training Kes, who discovers she can do far more than she imagined, though one exercise goes wrong and nearly kills Tuvok. Suspiria, believing Voyager's crew killed the Caretaker, comes aboard seeking revenge. Kes turns her power against Tanis, which weakens Suspiria long enough for the crew to subdue her, and Kes chooses to stay on Voyager.
