Dying Nacene who guarded the Ocampa from his Array and pulled ships across the galaxy in search of a compatible mate.
The Caretaker was a member of the Nacene, an extragalactic species of great power. Centuries earlier, his kind had accidentally devastated the Ocampa homeworld, and he stayed behind to care for the surviving Ocampa from a vast space station known as the Array, supplying their underground city with energy.
Near death, he searched the galaxy for a compatible being to carry on his duty, abducting ships and examining their crews, among them Voyager and Chakotay's Maquis raider. He met the crews through the illusion of a rural Earth farm. After he died, Janeway destroyed the Array to keep the Kazon from turning it against the Ocampa, stranding Voyager 70,000 light-years from home.
