Soval is a Vulcan ambassador to Earth and a major figure in the early political story of Star Trek: Enterprise, played by Gary Graham. Cool, dignified and distrustful of humans' impulsiveness, he leads the Vulcan High Command's efforts to restrain Earth's exploration.
He frequently clashes with Captain Archer, whose reckless optimism he finds irritating, yet he slowly begins to appreciate human tenacity. Over several seasons he witnesses major crises, including the Xindi attack, and he gradually reevaluates his own people's attitudes. In later years his position changes, and he finds himself an ally rather than an adversary of the Enterprise crew when Vulcan politics come to a crisis.
Soval endures as an elegant study in diplomacy. He shows that early Vulcan-human relations were far from smooth, and that respect between cultures had to be earned.
