Jay-Den Kraag

Klingon cadet at Starfleet Academy

Pacifist Klingon cadet and aspiring medical officer in the first new class of Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century.

Jay-Den Kraag, played by Karim Diané, is a Klingon cadet at Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century, training to become a medical officer. He is gentle and pacifistic, which sets him apart from many depictions of his people, and he is noted as Star Trek's first openly gay Klingon.
In the first episode, when the USS Athena is ambushed by Nus Braka, Jay-Den performs emergency surgery on the injured cadet master Lura Thok with help from his fellow cadet SAM. Later in the season, when the Doctor is incapacitated, he steps up as the Athena's acting medical officer and works out the meaning behind the Doctor's garbled speech, giving the crew the clue needed to stop the Omega mines. He also becomes the romantic interest of Kyle Jokovic, a friendly cadet from the Vulcan War College.
Jay-Den is one of the main cadets of Starfleet Academy. His story widens the range of Klingon characters in Star Trek and reflects the series' focus on young people finding their place.
