The Tellarites are a stocky humanoid species from Tellar Prime, with snout-like noses and coarse facial hair. They are famous for loving argument, which in their culture is a form of respect and even a pleasant way to pass the time, though other species often find it rude.
Tellarites first appeared in the original series episode Journey to Babel, in which the Tellarite ambassador Gav argues with Sarek aboard the Enterprise about the admission of the planet Coridan to the Federation. Gav is later found murdered, and Sarek is suspected until an Orion agent is revealed as the killer.
In Enterprise, the Tellarites appear in the period before the Federation, and the tense talks between Tellarites and Andorians in the episodes Babel One and United are an early step toward cooperation. Tellar Prime was one of the four founding members of the Federation in 2161. Tellarite officers and diplomats have continued to appear in later series.
