The Picard family's vineyard in La Barre, France, where Jean-Luc grew up, faced his brother Robert, and later retired.
Chateau Picard is the vineyard and family home of the Picard family, in the village of La Barre in France. Generations of Picards worked its land and made wine there, and Jean-Luc Picard grew up on the estate before leaving to join Starfleet. His older brother Robert stayed to run the vineyard and kept to the family's traditions.
Picard returned in 2367, recovering after his assimilation by the Borg, and argued and made peace with Robert. In 2371 Robert and his son René died in a fire at the estate, leaving Picard the last of his line. After he left Starfleet, Picard retired to the chateau, where he lived with Romulan helpers Laris and Zhaban until Dahj sought him out in 2399. The vineyard's wine also appears often in the series, carrying the family name.
Chateau Picard gives a personal side to Jean-Luc Picard. It shows his roots, his family conflicts and his hopes for a peaceful life, and it became the starting point for Star Trek: Picard and a place to which he often returns.
