Gwyn duels Asencia with Ilthuran's help while Dal and friends are captured alongside Chakotay.
With Ilthuran's support, Gwyn challenges Asencia to a duel on Solum. Elsewhere, Dal, Jankom, Zero and Maj'el are captured by the Diviner's men and locked in a cell with Captain Chakotay and his first officer. Dal knows that changing events could erase Gwyn from existence, so he tries not to disturb the original timeline, but he accidentally drops a phaser, and Chakotay seizes it and escapes to the Protostar.
That escape alters history, and Gwyn begins phasing in and out of existence, costing her the duel. The episode makes the season's central dilemma concrete: rescuing Chakotay, the reason the cadets came, endangers the friend whose existence depends on the past unfolding as it did. It also gives Chakotay, lost in the backstory of the first season, a real presence in the series, with Robert Beltran voicing him. Erin McNamara wrote the episode and Sung Shin directed.
