Chakotay is captured by a young Kazon on a ritual hunt.
Chakotay is stranded on a hostile moon after being attacked by a young Kazon-Ogla warrior named Kar, who is on a rite of passage required to become a man in his culture. The two are forced to cooperate to survive while the ship searches for them.
The episode gives the Kazon more culture and depth than they had been given before, showing them as a people with their own customs. It is also a showcase for Chakotay, who draws on his own heritage in dealing with the youth, and it places him in a mentoring role.
