Lwaxana's guest falls in love and faces a society's ritual.
Lwaxana Troi returns to the Enterprise and meets Dr. Timicin, a scientist from the planet Kaelon II who is attempting to save his dying sun. The two find themselves attracted to each other. But Timicin faces a custom of his people, the Resolution, in which every person reaching the age of sixty is expected to end his own life.
Lwaxana, who has little patience for the tradition, tries to persuade him to refuse, and the story becomes a debate about duty, dignity and the right to choose. It is one of the more serious Lwaxana episodes, and it shows the character in a deeper and more vulnerable light. It raises questions about aging and the role of society in an individual's life.
